The Nippon Foundation-University of Edinburgh Ocean Voices Fellows, Sheena Talma and Vanessa Ferreira Lopes attended the Deep Ocean Collective Solution Accelerator workshop in San Diego, USA, between October 2-5, 2023. This collaborative event, organized by the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) in partnership with COBRA and the Ocean Discovery League, aims to foster innovation and collaboration in deep-sea exploration and worked on discussing ways to achieve the goals of the UN Decade for Ocean Science. The accelerator was composed of five different workshops. Vanessa joined the ‘Deepening the Decade: Better Together’ group, dedicated to creating opportunities for collaboration, funding, capacity building, and engagement across regions and disciplines. Meanwhile, Sheena participated in the ‘Cheap and Deep Technology as a Means for Capacity Development’ workshop, led by the Ocean Discovery League, focusing on removing financial and technical barriers to deep-sea exploration.
