The Nippon Foundation-University of Edinburgh Ocean Voices Programme announces its first cohort of Fellows.

The inaugural Cohort of Fellows of the Nippon Foundation-University of Edinburgh Ocean Voices Programme is starting their work towards a healthier ocean through more equitable and inclusive participation in its management.

This new team of ocean professionals hail from all over the world - Brazil, Cape Verde, Fiji, Samoa, Seychelles, Trinidad and Tobago. They bring expertise ranging from the science of deep ocean and high seas, to stewardship of coastal areas to UN negotiations. Individually, they are setting out to redefine ocean futures in their ocean causes, communities and countries.

Together, they are amplifying under-represented voices in international ocean policy, bringing the needs of diverse ocean communities and causes to the attention of UN negotiations. The Fellows are supported by a crew of mentors and partners including the Ocean Voices programme office, Advisors and each other.

Along the way, we will be taking a critical look at what capacity building means in practice and how it contributes to mutual learning, as well as collaboratively designing customised approaches that meet the Fellows’ self-determined needs. We are partnering and convening people to exchange experiences about how to use our voice for ocean causes and communities, and we are reflecting on the role of ocean knowledge in the development of international ocean policy.

Meet the Fellows here and stay tuned to hear more from each of the Fellows by following Ocean Voices on TwitterLinkedIn and Instagram
