Constance Rambourg, PhD candidate at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources & Security (ANCORS), The University of Wollongong, came to the University of Edinburgh for a four-day visit in January 2023. Constance’s PhD research (co- supervised by Dr Harriet Harden-Davies) explores the linkages between colonialism and the development of large-scale marine protected areas in overseas territories. She explores the interactions between conservation and geopolitics in these areas and examines their impact on ocean equity outcomes for overseas territories and their local and indigenous communities. Her focal case study analyses these issues in the context of the Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail, which is amongst the largest MPAs in the world and is established in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. During her visit, Constance gave a presentation, followed by a Q&A session, introducing her research to University of Edinburgh postgraduate scholars and academics working on Ocean Law and Policy in an Ocean Governance PhD forum organized by Dr Harden-Davies and Prof. James Harrison. This event was also an opportunity for Constance and another visiting PhD student from ANCORS, Anais Remont, to meet and discuss with ocean law and policy scholars and experts from University of Edinburgh about their research journey, methods, and interests, and to further develop networking ties between the Australian research centre and the University of Edinburgh. Constance and Anais were also able to attend the second episode of the Early Career Ocean Exchange organized under the Ocean Voices Programme where they discussed with young ocean professionals with a diverse range of experiences, the various ways in which we can use our voice to transform knowledge into change for an ocean cause that we care about. This visit was overall a great opportunity to develop and strengthen young professionals’ knowledge and networks, and to share experiences around common research, career and ocean interests.
